OUC has purchased two new Mustang PFDs for OUC clubs to try out.

Drowning is the leading cause of fatalities involving recreational boating, and in over 80% of drowning fatalities, the victims were not wearing personal flotation devices (PFDs). In the interest of improving the safety of OUC members and volunteers who spend a lot of time on near the water and on boats, OUC highly recommends the use of PFDs for water activities.

To that end, OUC has procured two Mustang “Elite 120” PFDs for evaluation by interested OUC Clubs. Contact OUC to ask to borrow a PFD for up to 3 weeks to try one out, show it off and encourage your members to purchase and proudly wear a PFD.

Help make PFDs “The Norm” at OUC events 

 

Info about these loaner PFDs:

  • The PFDs are adult only.
  • One-size-fits-all.
  • They are low profile.
  • The PFD sits off the neck for all-day comfort.
  • These PFDs provide at least 12.2 kg / 27lbs of buoyancy within a few seconds.

They inflate one of 3 ways:

  1. Automatically when submerged below 12 cm / 4” of water.
  2. When you pull the inflate handle.
  3. When orally inflated.

Re-arming the inflation device after use:

If automatically inflated through submersion or pulling the inflate handle, the PFDs will need to be re-armed with a new “Re-Arm Kit A MA 5183”, which includes a new pressure-sensitive switch, status indicator, and CO2 cartridge (cost is approximately $150.00).

Submit Your Club’s Request to Borrow an OUC PFD

To submit your Club’s request to evaluate one of these PFDs for up to 3 weeks:

  • OUC must receive the request from one of your Club exeutive team members who will take responsibility for the PFD on loan.
  • Send an email request to: safety@underwatercouncil.com
  • OUC will put you on the evaluation rotation on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Depending on the number of interested Clubs, and the order in which your Club’s application is received, you could receive the PFD within a few days or up to a few months.
